What UPEI has to say about training your employees (Centre for Life-Long Learning):

Why Train? A Note for Employers

Benefits

Staff training can be the smartest investment an organization can make. It has many benefits, including:

  • Development of core skills and tools: training means smarter and more effective employees.
  • Keeping up with change: the workplace is changing fast, and training can keep you ahead of the curve.
  • Improved morale and staff retention: investing in your staff demonstrates that you recognize and value them.
  • Motivated, confident, employees: training can inspire, and build the confidence necessary for self-reliance and enterprise.
  • Employee development: these days: employers cannot guarantee employment for life—but they should be able to offer employability for life.

Return on Investment (ROI)

In some situations, it's not an ROI issue, but an issue of Train or Perish. It other cases, it is important to justify the investment of training dollars.

Studies have shown the falsity of the old myth that training people only prepares them to join another employer. The evidence is to the contrary. Calculating the actual ROI remains a complicated business, since issues such as increased staff morale do not immediately show up on balance sheets. Nevertheless, a worldwide study conducted by the Conference Board of Canada showed a definite correlation between levels of training and profitability: those organizations that train more see improvements in their bottom lines. Those that skimp on training, or ignore it altogether, lose both competitiveness and profitabilty.
